    Episode 4

Ferret Leak Detection w/ Rich Ingham, CEO of Ferret Technologies | APS Drain Gear Podcast

Ferret's technology was a unique leak detection system that employed an inflatable balloon, which was inserted into pipes and propelled forward by water pressure. When the balloon encountered a drop in pressure at the leak site, it would stop, precisely identifying the location of the leak. This method did not rely on sound, making it highly effective across various pipe materials, including plastic, copper, and lead. Over time, continuous refinements enhanced the system's accuracy and reliability, allowing it to become a trusted tool for contractors. The system featured trace wires and radio transmitters, enabling pinpoint leak detection within inches. Its versatility allowed it to work across a wide range of pipe sizes, from as small as 3/8 inch up to 1.5 inches, with the potential for use in larger applications. The Ferret operated solely on water pressure, eliminating the need for electricity, which minimized operational complexity and made it suitable for remote or hard-to-reach locations. The simple yet robust design ensured reliability in demanding field environments. In addition to leak detection, Ferret offered enhanced mapping capabilities. It could detect and map hidden branch lines and fittings, providing comprehensive insights into plumbing systems. This feature was particularly useful in complex networks such as irrigation systems, large commercial properties, and residential buildings. Rich highlighted how Ferret's technology helped contractors reduce unnecessary excavation costs by accurately locating leaks and identifying unknown branch lines. Jake emphasized the importance of proper training for contractors, reflecting APS’s commitment to providing comprehensive support. APS offered both virtual and in-person training sessions, demonstrations, and educational resources to ensure users could fully leverage the capabilities of the Ferret system. Although APS no longer carries the Ferret product, its innovative approach to leak detection and mapping set a standard for precision and efficiency in the industry.
